Secondary I teacher education
As part of an education program for secondary I teachers, students gain the skills that make it possible for them to plan and design lessons based on the current curricula while taking interdisciplinary points of view into consideration. The program teaches them to advise pupils on decisions that need to be made with regard to their scholastic and professional career possibilities, assess their abilities and performance, work with other teachers, school administrators, officials and parents, and collaborate in working out and implementing education projects. Secondary I teachers receive a Master’s degree upon graduation (cf. EDK degree title regulations, in German). According to the EDK Regulations on the Recognition of University Degrees for Teacher at the Secondary I Level (in German) the course of studies requires 270 to 300 ECTS credits for graduation.
Graduates of the teacher training program for the secondary I level receive a “Teaching Certificate for the Secondary I Level” and the academic title of Bachelor of Arts or Master of Arts in Secondary Education.
The following institutions train teacher at the secondary I level: PHBern, PH FHNW, University of Fribourg, PHTG, HEP Vaud, SUPSI-DFA, PHZ, HEP-BEJUNE, PHSG, PHSH under the direction of the PH Zürich (cf. Overview of study programs).
According to the EDK regulations, for admission to a secondary I teachers program, a student must have a Maturity Certificate from a Gymnasium, a teaching certificate recognized by the EDK for the primary level or a degree from a University of Applied Science. Applicants with a Specialized Maturity Certificate or a diploma from a recognized vocational college, a Professional Maturity Certificate or a recognized certificate, completed three-year or longer apprenticeship and several years of work experience must take an acceptance examination to show that their general education corresponds to that of an applicant with a Maturity Certificate from a Gymnasium.
